Marlin 39a firing pin.
Don't fix what ain't broke. I change out to a Wolff reduced power hammer spring in my Marlin 1894C 357mag because I changed out the OEM two piece firing pin to a one piece stainless firing pin which is heavier firing pin. The reduced hammer spring makes the action smoother and the trigger pull lighter.
There is a flat spring placed above the chamber. The screw that holds it can be seen on top of the receiver. That spring serves two purposes. 1) It keeps the firing pin from rising above the rim of the cartridge. 2) It keeps the cartridge aligned with the chamber for smooth chambering. If that spring is missing, you will get some failures to feed.I did this on both my 39CL's. A small nylon washer between the frame and the lever spring. On the underside of the frame, just ahead of the lever is a small screw that holds the lever spring in place. Placing a spacer between the frame and the spring lessened the pressure exerted by the spring on the lever.The firing pin impression was definitely longer and deeper on the model 60 casings so I went back to work on the 39A firing pin and action. I reshaped the end of the firing pin, making it slightly longer in footprint while keeping the same overall firing pin length. I can move the bolt back & forth about 1/4" with my hand , I note that the firing pin does not move with the bolt. It will not take down & I cannot remove the lever because it has a blind pin. The firing pin floats in the bolt and depending on how clean the channel is that the pin rides in it will sometimes keep the firing pin from moving freely. With that info you can now go to the next show and keep buying 39A's till the funds run out. Have fun.
The retaining pin would just fall out if the gun was opened and turned upside down. The fireing pin seems loose and will go back and forth about a 1/4 inch. This may be normal but I just can't remember. The gun went back together fine and fires properly. I have both a Marlin 39-A (pre-safety model) and a Browning SA 22.
