Don't fix what ain't broke. I change out to a Wolff reduced power hammer spring in my Marlin 1894C 357mag because I changed out the OEM two piece firing pin to a one piece stainless firing pin which is heavier firing pin. The reduced hammer spring makes the action smoother and the trigger pull lighter.

There is a flat spring placed above the chamber. The screw that holds it can be seen on top of the receiver. That spring serves two purposes. 1) It keeps the firing pin from rising above the rim of the cartridge. 2) It keeps the cartridge aligned with the chamber for smooth chambering. The retaining pin would just fall out if the gun was opened and turned upside down. The fireing pin seems loose and will go back and forth about a 1/4 inch. This may be normal but I just can't remember. The gun went back together fine and fires properly.
