Like SG says, they are a pain, and often require splitting the tractor to change. If the inlet filter is plugged, as often occurs, there is a much easier fix, that will only cost you a dollar or two and a minute of time. Add about an extra 1/2 gallon of hyd fluid above the normal fill level.

I recommend that you buy an I&T FO-4 shop manual for your 8N before you tear into the hydraulic system. Cost $35-$40. They have a procedure in the I&T FO-4 manual to test pump pressure. I would definitely check the pump first.

Need to go ahead and drain the oil if you do this as you may drop contaminants in it. you will need 4.5 - 5 g's of either NH M2C134d style fluid ( UTF fluid from tractor supply is fine.. and cheaper ).. or 90wt gl-1 or 3 type oil. napa sells 90wt 5g's of gl-1 oil for about 25$ part number 65-205.

It seems like it would be fine if I just put one of these knobs above the lever. All you need is a wing-nut, a 3/4-inch nylon bushing, and a screw.
