If the throttle linkage, timing advance, and carb settings are not done in the proper sequence you end up chasing yourself. As long as the fuel system is funtioning correctly, you can vary that by several degrees and you'll know by the rpm's at idle in gear when you have it right. You need to warm up the engine for around 15 minutes before examining the timing light attached to the spark plug. At this point, you can inspect the reading on the timing light to determine the current timing of the engine. Depending on the model you’re running, the timing may vary.
Idle timing for that motor is 0-2 ATDC and speed is 775-825.. Idle RPM is adjusted with the IDLE timing screw, which adjusts the timing at idle only. If you cant get the motor to idle correctly between the 0-2 atdc range then check the carb mixture and engine temp. To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig up a spark tester on the #1 cylinder plug wire. Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire.

Hi. I have a 1985 Johnson 100 hp commercial outboard. The model number is J100WMLCOC. I cannot find the wot timing spec anywhere. I have looked many times on the net and here with no luck. First check to see that the throttle cable closes the carbs all the way. If so, get a Service manual and double check idle and max timing.
