I sort of agree with "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but if there is too little clearance, no oil will get in there (you need at least the specified minimum clearance) and if it's too much, the crank won't float on the bearing and you'll score it. I hold bike straight up, after it's sat 5 minutes. and fill to middle /top line in glass while holding bike straight up. If you're buying oil just get 4 qrts, just because :grin.
