Are you using clearblue advanced? I use both the advanced and the strips. Clearblue tests for estrogen as well as the LH surge. When you get the flashing smiley face it detects a spike in estrogen which occurs before your LH surge is my understanding. I would just follow the instructions for whatever product you're using.
