Use determination and nuke boses with rock slicer, switch to katana when calling summon.Uchigatana with similar stats will do way more damage, and 1 shot kill with unsheathe. It's one of those weapons that's a noob trap, imo. People get stuck on using the ranged attack as a crutch, while the actual katana moveset is extremely versatile and is, in tandem with the ranged attack, the key to being really skilled with it.
