The slide would work, but I wouldn't recommend using a .40 barrel in a 9mm slide because the breach faces are different sizes. I've used a 9mm barrel in a 96 slide before and had zero issues. But the .40 won't fit the breach face on a 92 slide. The 92 slide isn't designed to withstand the forces created by the cartridge. Thanks.
The 96 is an "FS" in that it has the large head hammer pin that requires the compatible clearance cut in the frame (there is no such thing as a 96F, because the 96 came after Beretta went to the FS standard).
