I have owned several shaft drive bikes, and never had to do more than just change the oil and lube splines at the final drive. I looked at the service manual, and all it shows is change the final drive oil every 24,000 miles.

From my studies there are 3 or 4 that are the top contenders: 1- Rotella. 2- Amsoil. 3- Mobil 1. 4- mutual (or something like that) It's 100% glycol; either 100% propylene glycol (PG) or a blend of PG and ethylene glycol (EG). Its specific heat capacity is only 80% that of 50/50 EG/water at 212F and its viscosity is 3.3 times higher at that temp. This means that it flows more slowly through your engine AND removes less heat than 50/50 EG/water. A double-whammy. Replace the drain plugs, making sure they have their respective crush washers. Torque both drain bolts to 22 foot-pounds. Step 7. Pour in 3.5 quarts of HP4 synthetic 10W40 engine oil. The VTX1800 takes 4 quarts of oil, so check the oil after you pour in the first 3.5 quarts to see if the engine will take the last half quart. Step 8.
